Once the CNN Heroes piece, featuring Morningside Village, was aired in June 2010, we began to receive email letters with heart-rending stories about institutional abuse that family members discovered at the nursing homes where their parents and grandparents live/lived. We also received numerous inquiries from all over the nation and beyond from people who want to know if there is such an eldercare village in their home towns, or they want to know how to start one. What great news! We are thrilled to learn that the need for our kind of compassionate eldercare resounds with so many.
Although at the moment we don’t have the resources to provide help, we soon will! S.O.S., Support Our Seniors is now undertaking a project called “Eldercare Village Modeling”, and we expect to have something ready to add to our website in the fall. Naturally, each environment is different, so we will be offering guidelines that transcend local specifics and that can be applied in different settings. We will also provide an interactive feature that will allow village “builders” to help one another as we all move forward together. Finally, we will thus be creating a network that can serve as an important eldercare resource on a national basis.
