Any American must realize that there is a distinct absence of the very old in the media today and even on the streets and in the homes of families in our nation. We at LiLY believe that Americans could become more comfortable and more dedicated to ethical care for the elderly with improved exposure to them.
LiLY is working with partners to create media initiatives that aim to bring into the public eye life affirming moments in the lives of elders and people who care for them. These initiatives aim to increase the visibility of America’s seniors, bringing them more into focus, into our culture, and eventually into our lives.
In 2012 LiLY launched a compelling initiative: Love An Elder Day. The events and activities, included a proclamation from NYC Mayor Bloomberg and from NY State Assembly Member Daniel O’Donnell, declaring October 1st Love An Elder Day, the same day of the year that the United Nations has designated as “International Day of Older Persons”. LiLY created a media campaign and community celebrations on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. To the right, for example, is a poster that appeared on the sides of Broadway telephone booths. Now, we are excited that the Love An Elder Day celebration is expanding to reach other communities across the land.
